We came across an article in The New York Times about Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London's most prominent fashion school, that had a fashion show with a trend of roomy clothes that resembled alot of what abaya fashion is moving towards. From the article:

What's interesting is the quick association the NYT editor saw between those designs and abayas. Could the future of fashion around the world be inspired from abaya designs? And if so, how will this impact the abaya fashion world? Will we see abaya designs becoming more mainstream in major fashion shows in the future? We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.
"An example of the bold, big-as-a tent look was from Bethan Silverwood , who splashed geometric orange patterns on black, monastic robes. Like most of the garments in the show, it revealed as much body language as an abaya."

"Is volume the new shape? Designers this season have mostly focused on the long, thin and shapely. But a Saint Martin’s graduate is supposed to be ahead of the curve. And on that reckoning, the future of fashion is straight, square and huge."

I'm not sure they are ready to embrace such a drastic change in fashion (from 'less [clothes] is more' to 'less [skin] is more'. Plus, abayas are alot more elegant than the design above, even if it is adapted. Nothing wrong with 'straight, square, and huge' though!
